How to Play Queens and Diamonds 3.5

This is a two-player trick-taking game with bidding, played with a deck of 52 cards. The aim of the game is to score points by taking tricks and by fulfilling contracts made at the beginning of the round. At the end of the round, the player with the most points wins.

The ranking of the cards is: A (high), K, Q, J, 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2 (low). The ace is always high and the two is always low.

The player who bids first is known as the opener. The other player is called the responder.

The dealer shuffles and deals thirteen cards to each player. The remainder of the deck is placed face down in the middle of the table to form a stock.

The Bidding Process

Each player looks at their cards and decides how many tricks they think they can take (not necessarily all thirteen). They then place a number of chips corresponding to this number in front of them - for example, three chips for three tricks.

The opener then either passes (by putting no chips in front of them) or bids higher than the current bid - for example four chips for four tricks. If the opener has no more chips remaining, they must pass.

If both players pass in succession, then there is a re-deal and another round of bidding begins.

If either player bids higher than four chips (or if both players have no more chips), then that particular round is ended and that particular player's bid becomes their contract for that round. Play then proceeds as normal.

Taking Tricks

In each round, the bidder attempts to win as many tricks as they bid (not necessarily all thirteen). Whoever wins the majority of tricks (at least seven) wins that particular round and also scores one point towards their total score. If they win all thirteen tricks (a "slam"), they score two points instead.

If any other player takes a trick when they were not entitled to do so (for example by playing a higher card than was led), they are said to have "stolen" that trick and must give it to whichever player took most recently winning that particular trick counts as taking all thirteen tricks in a slam situation). The first time this happens during a given round, that player loses one point; on any subsequent occasions during that same round, they lose two points instead. Whichever player currently has most points at the end of the round wins that particular round even if they did not win enough tricks to score any points themselves.

Scoring

At the end of each round - whether or not it was won by taking enough tricks - each player totals up how many points they have scored so far: either one point for winning at least seven out of thirteen rounds; two points for winning all thirteen rounds; or one point per stolen trick taken multiplied by however many rounds have been played). The first player to reach 6 or more points (or whoever has most points if both players reach 6 or more) thereby wins overall game irrespective how many individual rounds have been won
